Scintillation Detectors

See our reference section for more infomation on scintillator types and their best use.

Sodium Iodide Detectors

Very high light output, good energy resolution.
Major uses - General scintillation counting, health physics, enviormental monitoring and high temprature use.

Cesium IodideDetctors (Tl)(Na)(undoped)

Non-hygroscopic, rugged, long wavelength emission.
High light output, rugged. Geophysical, physics and general radiation detection

BGO Detectors

BGO detectors are particually suited to the detection of natural radioactivity. With a high density and Z value, BGO also performs well in hight energy applcations. Major uses - Particle physics, geophysical research, PET, anti-Compton spectrometers.

CaF2 Detectors

Low Z, high light output.
Major uses - sub nanosecond fast coincidence timing, b detection, a , b phoswiches.

6Lil(Eu) Detectors

High neutron cross-section, high light output.
Major uses - Thermal neutron detection and spectroscopy

6Li - glass Detectors

High neutron cross-section, non-hygroscopic.
Major uses - Thermal neutron detection

CdWO4

Very high density, low afterglow, radiation hard.
Major uses - low afterglow CT applications, DC measurement of X-rays (high intensity), readout with photodiodes, Computerized Tomography (CT).

YAP-(Ce)

High light output, low Z, fast.
Major uses - MHz (low energy) X-ray spectroscopy, synchrotron physics.

Plastic Detctors

Fast, low density and Z, high light output.
Major uses - Particle detection, beta detection.
The cost of large plastic scintillation detectors (per volume) is much lower than that of equivalent size NaI(Tl) detectors.

Dynode Chains & Electronics

There are many options and considerations for the back end electronics of a scintilation detector. The following page outlines some of the options and differences between them.
